Measuring vehicles on the testing stand

MICHELIN Engineering & Services has experience in obtaining measurements of vehicles on testing stands. These measurements address the following objectives :

  • Data for simulation
  • Possibility of benchmark studies based on access to a vast database of vehicle measurements
  • Rapid identification of the main problems before testing and on-track measurements

Damper

MICHELIN Engineering & Services is experienced in specific analyses and character trials on shock absorbers and vibrating parts (pressure bags and flexible joints). These vehicle measurements are carried out on the following Instron machines:

  • 50 Hz - mono-axial machine
    • Clearance +/-  125 mm
    • Max. effort 25 000 N
  • 300 Hz - mono-axial machine
    • Clearance+/-  20 mm
    • Max. effort 25 000 N
  • Possible application of force perpendicular to the main force

Characterization of the steering system

MICHELIN Engineering & Services has experience in trials to obtain the following measurements:

  • Measuring the friction of the steering system (pivot pins, steering shaft, cogs)
  • Gravity force
  • Measure of the overall strength of the shaft
  • Other measurements on request

Inertia

MICHELIN Engineering & Services has experience in obtaining the following vehicle measurements:

  • Inertia
  • Moments of inertia (3 axes) and the position of the centre of gravity

Body Torsion

MICHELIN Engineering & Services is experienced in measuring stationary vehicles to check body torsion.

K&C

MICHELIN Engineering & Services has experience with elastic-kinematic measurements of rear and front running gear with tires or fake wheels. These stationary vehicle measurements include the following services:

  • Characterization of vehicles with tires or fake wheels
  • Quasi-static stress:
    • Torque or turning angle
    • Vertical movement and anti roll
    • x, y, z force on the ground
    • Mz torque
  • Measurements:
    • Torque and steering angle
    • Torque and force at the wheel base
    • Movement at the wheel centre
    • Turning and wheel camber
    • Possible additional sensors

Michelin offers a standard K&C protocol as well as customized protocols for specific analyses (e.g. steering system).
